apinchadash:

Lembas bread is probably the most popular Hobbit/Lord of the Rings food, and I must admit it is one of my favorites as well. For those of you who dont know what it is, here’s a brief description: Lembas bread is made by the Elves, and is a thin biscuit type of bread that is nutritious, keeps for months, and a bite will “fill the stomach of a grown man” (not if you are a Hobbit, however).

In the LOTR series, the Elves give the fellowship Lembas bread for their journey. It is often compared to what we call Hardtack, which has a quite similar definition. Tolkien was quoted saying that it is “more of a chewing exercise” than enjoyable to eat. When I was doing some research, I found out that Peter Jackson said they used a sweet shortbread recipe for the prop of Lembas Bread in the movie, as having the actors eating a bunch of hardtack for days may not be enjoyable!

I decided to follow Mr. Jackson’s lead on this one, and make a tastier bread. I will include a recipe for hard tack for those of you who would like to try that instead. I have made it in the past, and will probably make it again in the future.

I made the leaf by printing out a Mallorn Leaf Template (search for it in google images). I then combined a bunch of different green colored pencils until I reached a desired color. Then, I lightly heated up beeswax to soften, and rubbed it on the paper to give the waxy consistency of the leaf.
