probably one of the most insidious forms of ableism i’ve encountered is the way inhumane methods of treating mental illness are only considered inhumane when they happen to people who aren’t mentally ill or who we no longer consider to be mentally ill (eg it’s considered a tragedy that women were institutionalized for hysteria and not that people were and ARE institutionalized at all)
that list going around about ‘look at all these ridiculous reasons people were institutionalized tag yourself!!’ is incredibly unfunny given that we still live in a society that essentially criminalizes people for modes of thought and behavior regardless of whether or not they have harmed anyone or desire treatment. (reminder that the police can’t act against against stalkers until an actual crime has been committed but those diagnosed with mental illness can be court mandated into treatment/institutionalization because they pose a “threat” to THEMSELVES or others. the legal system literally criminalizes the mentally ill more than they criminalize uh… criminals.)
